Applied Acoustics Research Institute, founded in 1958, is a pioneering organization
in the research and development of underwater acoustic, ultrasonic and non-acoustic
detection equipment in China. It owns not only a world-level low and medium
frequency indoor anechoic water tank, but also other advanced equipment
and facilities for scientific research and development. The State Key Laboratory
of Ocean Acoustics, Underwater Acoustic Calibration & Measurement Laboratory
and Underwater Acoustic Products Test Center are also established in the
Institute. Its technical expertise in many fields, together with strong
engineering and development capability, makes it a unique research and development
base for applied acoustics. It is the leading unit in charge of Underwater Acoustic and Ultrasonic Standardization Committee of International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC) and Shipbuilding Sub-Union of China Science and Technology Information Network Union. It is also authorized to confer doctoral and master¡¯s degrees in underwater acoustic engineering.
Since its founding, total 303 science and technology achievement awards have been granted, of which 25 national awards including national special grade awards of scientific advancements and 171 provincial or ministerial awards.
With decades of reform and development, the Institute has today become the largest comprehensive applied acoustics institution, integrating scientific research, manufacture and trade. Great success has been made in these fields such as petroleum well logging, ultrasonic application and electronic engineering. Petroleum well logging tools, marine instruments, series of ultrasonic products, intelligent construction integration control systems and high speed digital signal processors are now in fair scale production, from which significant economic and social benefits have been obtained.
